This course provides an introduction to all aspects of engaging schools in museum learning programmes and is ideal for people interested in museum learning careers or new in their role.

This course is for museum learning practitioners who are interested in deepening their knowledge of working with schools audiences. This course provides a great introduction to all aspects of engaging schools in museum learning programmes.
Who runs the course?
This four-week online course is run by Kara Wescombe Blackman, museum learning expert with over two decades of experience of working with collections, exhibitions and museums. With responsibility for learning, public programmes and visitor services for a number of prestigious museums in different settings, she has wide-ranging insights and practical experience to share, from engaging new audiences to creating new museum and learning spaces.
When & where is it?
This virtual course will take place over five weeks and will be run online through a series of virtual lectures with time for Q&A and discussion with other participants. There will also be a possibility to engage with the recorded sessions afterwards.
Course Structure
Session 1: About Schools
Develop an understanding of different kinds of schools and about the primary and secondary school day and annual planning cycle so that you can plan and promote sessions more successfully. In this session we will also discuss the importance of getting to know local schools and successful marketing approaches you can use for different budgets.
Session 2: Developing programmes
Improve your knowledge of how to use collections and exhibitions to develop your programme, and how to involve teachers in creating your programme to meet their curriculum objectives. In this session we will also look at practical logistics of in-person visits including writing a session plan, organising learning spaces and safeguarding.
Session 3: Delivering programmes
Explore how to deliver programmes and what makes a good learning experience for children. Grow your understanding of SEND and Quality First Teaching and how to differentiate learning experiences to support accessibility. In this session we will also discuss how to involve and train freelancers and volunteers to support and deliver programmes.
Session 4: Marketing, evaluation and reporting
In this session, explore marketing ideas and the value of evaluating your programmes as well as how to write effective reports for your museum and funders.
