16 January @ 16:00 - 17:00

Trainers:
- Jo Gillam (she/her) – GEM East Area Rep
- Nicky McIntosh – Museum Consultant and creator of the Museum Learning Works website
- Caroline Hammer – Senior Curatorial and Learning Officer, Chelmsford Museum
- Lucie Wheeler – Founding Director of RECAP Ltd and academic researcher at Anglia Ruskin University
What will be covered?
Context – museums and home education
In August 2024 Nicky McIntosh published her research into Working with Home Educated and Non-school Attending Children in the Museum and Gallery Sector, funded by Arts Council England’s Developing Your Creative Practice grant scheme. She will talk about her findings in this session.
Nicky is currently working with GEM to create a toolkit to support further work in museums and galleries with home
educators and children who can’t access school.
Case study – Chelmsford Museum
Caroline Hammer will describe how Chelmsford’s work with home educated children has grown organically, and benefits from good links with home education networks.
Context – the home education community
Lucie Wheeler is studying for a PhD in Home Education and home educated her daughter from the age of 14. In this session she will share her knowledge and expertise in the home education community and how she plans to help the heritage sector to develop their museum provision specifically for this group. Lucie has also set up a Working Group for those working in the sector and welcomes conversations with anyone interested in joining.
Who should attend?
Learning and engagement staff and volunteers; trustees with an interest in increasing engagement with children and families.
This session is appropriate for beginners. It is also a good refresher for those with some experience, with both opportunities to share good practice and discussion time to allow for a deeper dive into the topic.
Learning objectives
- Meet like-minded colleagues working across the region
- Share good practice
- Learn the benefits of working with home educators
- Know where to find key studies and research for advocacy
