Putting Learning and Children’s Voices at the Heart of Egyptian Collections
27 March @ 15:00 - 16:30
Free – £5Derby Museums’ collections from ancient Egypt, along with loans from the British Museum and Manchester Museum, have recently been brought together in a special exhibition entitled Displaced: From the Nile to the Derwent. The displays explored why the collections are in Derby and how they travelled all the way from North Africa. New research helped tell previously untold stories, exploring the history of the collection and Derbyshire’s links with Egypt; critically examining previous displays and opening up discussions around colonial collections and the display of human remains.
Rachael Wayne, Learning Programmer, and Laura Phillips, Head of Curatorship, will talk about how Learning and the child’s voice became central to the curation of the exhibition, to the re-design of Derby Museums’ future permanent display and our formal schools offer. They will be joined by Lucy Maycock, Learning Manager and Heba Abd El Gawad, Curator, at the Horniman Museum who, like Derby Museums, embarked on an International Schools project with schools in Egypt. We will give valuable insight in how to create your own links with schools in Egypt and tips to adapt school sessions for exhibitions.
