St Etheldreda’s Church in Old Hatfield is a beautiful Grade I listed church dating back to the 13th Century. It has a rich and significant history and is situated next to Hatfield House. The church is soon to embark on a major repair and development project to see the building’s condition improved, new community spaces created and toilets and kitchen installed.

Before we start this project, we need to create the strong foundations from which the project can build on and ensure its success. Spires Heritage are leading this phase of the project and assisting with the recruitment of a Community Connection Officer who will play an important role in this phase.

The Community Connection Officer will work with our team to engage with members of the church congregation, local community, Hatfield House, Love Hatfield, visitors, stakeholders and other local organisations to build and establish support for our project. This will be a highly influential role, representing the parish within the community and generating interest and enthusiasm and support for the project.

Key Responsibilities

Community Engagement

  1. Engage with residents of Hatfield and wider within the borough to promote the project in person and using social media
  2. Build and develop connections with residents, local businesses, schools, music groups, heritage organisations, and other community projects to understand the needs of the area and develop positive relationships
  3. Lead on and conduct community consultation, using a variety of methods (including face to face and online) with the general public, giving them opportunity to feed into the future project activities, how the church building is used, and how they can be involved
  4. Lead on and conduct community consultation with potential partners and stakeholders, giving them opportunity to feed into the future project activities, how the church building is used, and how they can be involved
  5. Lead on and conduct community consultation with potential major donors (the local rich), to encourage them to financially support the project

  7. Organise open events to engage people with the project and get them involved, including a pilot heritage project to better understand local interest in the church heritage

Publicity and Promotion

  1. Act as an ambassador and representative of the parish to the wider community
  2. Create new, innovative and interesting ways to engage people in the project
  3. Lead the social media presence for the project

General

  1. Understand existing audiences and visitors to St Etheldreda’s and identify new groups that are not yet being targeted
  2. Undertake desk-based research to understand the church, its community, the needs and opportunities, history and opportunities for new activity
  3. Gather baseline data on church life in order understand the current context
  4. Produce a Community and Heritage Audit Report based on data gathered during this project

This list is not exhaustive and other requirements in line with the post may be required

It is expected that most the time will be spent out in the community. The appointed consultant will also be expected to work one day a week from St Etheldreda’s Church (or another location nearby) but will also be able to work from home when appropriate. Working hours will be agreed based on requirements of the post and flexible in line with development of the project.

Output Target

  • Community and Heritage Audit: A comprehensive and user-friendly document summarising what you have learned
  • Database of friends: 100 names and contact details for people who are interested in supporting St Etheldreda’s
  • 2 community engagement events: Successful sessions which encourage people awareness and support of St Etheldreda’s heritage and projects
  • Survey of ideas: Survey with 50+ responses, online or on paper, inviting and prompting ideas for the next phase
  • Record of context: Implement and manage record keeping systems to monitor church activity at the start and analyse trends going forward
