The National Gallery exists so that people can engage with great art. A public museum with a uniquely important collection of pictures for the benefit of all, the Gallery tells a coherent story of European painting spanning seven centuries, and aims to engage the widest possible audience, with nearly 10 million visitors onsite and online every year.
As we approach our 200th anniversary, we are committed to the idea of the National Gallery as a place of learning and enjoyment and we aim to realise the Gallery’s potential as a source of inspiration for this and future generations. To help us deliver our ambitions, we now seek an outstanding individual for the new role of Head of Learning and Programmes. Reporting to the Director of Public Programmes and Partnerships and working with senior managers across the institution, this individual will focus on fostering engagement with the public through museum learning, significantly expanding our programmes and activities to work more with contemporary artists, and sharing our pictures and expertise with people across the UK and regional museums. They will ensure that the Gallery’s strategic programmes and projects are aligned with key national policy developments, issues and opportunities, and that they are inspired and informed by current research and best practice in the field.
Candidates will be excellent negotiators and influences, able to establish positive collaborative working relationships with colleagues in the National Gallery, and in other museums and galleries, and educational partners, across the UK. Educated to degree level, they will be strong strategic thinkers, and have experience of successfully managing change and fostering cross-departmental working.
