Would you like to play an important role in Chichester’s award winning Novium Museum to help us deliver an ambitious programme of Learning and Community Engagement activities?

We are looking for an experienced and self-driven museum or heritage Learning and Community Engagement Officer to join our dedicated and friendly team, based in the centre of Chichester. This position provides an exciting opportunity to support the development and delivery of an ambitious programme of formal and informal learning and engagement activities to all audiences including schools, families, youth, community, students and adult learning groups, both in the museum and the wider community.

Through their work, the Learning and Community Engagement Officer will help to grow and enhance the museum’s learning offer, which includes workshops run at the museum and in schools, an extensive loan box service and sleepovers which can be run for schools, families and community groups. Learning activities for schools link closely to the National Curriculum and cover topics from Prehistory to Life in Space.

This role will also support income generation, including contributing to grant applications and sponsorship.

The post holder will project manage the museum’s annual Roman Week festival which takes place every May half term, developing and delivering an exciting programme of activities taking place at the museum and across the City, and liaising with organisations delivering Roman Week content across the District.

The Learning and Community Engagement Officer will be responsible for the recruitment, co-ordination, training and supervision of volunteers, responding to Museum and Front of House requirements for volunteer support.

The successful applicant will have experience of and enthusiasm for developing and delivering schools learning and audience engagement programmes in a museum or heritage setting, and knowledge of the school curriculum.

They will have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly at all levels in writing and verbally. The person appointed needs to be able to work well on their own, and be able to prioritise their workload effectively. They also need to be flexible and able to cope with the changing demands of the work.

A recognised museums and / or education qualification or equivalent experience is essential for the role.

It is essential that the person appointed is fully computer-literate. The Museum is part of the District Council’s intranet, which uses Microsoft Outlook, Word and other programmes.

It is essential that the successful candidate is able to drive, with a clean driving licence, as the duties of the post will involve travel for outreach activities, loan box delivery and meetings. The Museum owns its own van which the postholder would be expected to drive.

The District Council has a very active in-house training programme, and training in Health & Safety issues, internal procedures, IT and other matters will be given as required.

Normal working hours for this post are 37 hours over a 5 day period. The post holder will be expected to work a rota as The Novium will be open up to 7 days per week during the summer season. Regular weekend and evening work will be required as the post supports the delivery of a range of events, including sleepovers at the museum.

Interviews are likely to take place on 2nd October. The start date for the post is likely to be in late October to allow for a handover with the substantive post holder.
