The Parish of Walthamstow are seeking the services of an experienced Project Manager with a background in delivering successful heritage projects to oversee the development and implementation of our National Lottery Heritage Fund-supported Creative Church project, which will see St Mary’s Church – Walthamstow’s ancient church and oldest building – redeveloped and regenerated for the benefit of the entire community. This role will involve overseeing our activity plan, building works and budget for our entire Creative Church project, which is estimated to cost approximately £3.37 million in total.
Our exciting project includes the construction of a sensitive extension (which will include our new offices as well as a new public entrance), the installation of a café for church and commercial use, the creation of a new art gallery and meeting space, the creation of a new heritage space, the installation of a new lighting and sound system, a dramatic reordering of the building (including the removal of church pews on the ground floor), making extensive repairs, and more.
We are also looking for our project manager to work with Waltham Forest Council to deliver high quality public realm improvements in and around the church, specifically converting our car park to public space.
There is a full programme of activities that will be delivered as part of our National Lottery Heritage funding; many of these activities will focus on the artistic and musical heritage of Walthamstow and Waltham Forest, which is London’s first Borough of Culture (2019). A robust business plan is at the heart of creating a sustainable long-term future for this ancient community hub.
St Mary’s Church is a Grade II* listed building – a 900 year-old church at the top of Walthamstow Village with connections to important people from Walthamstow’s past. It is also home to the St Mary’s Music Hall, an award-winning series of world, jazz and folk music.
This is a three-year consultancy, which will begin in January 2020, and we are seeking those with expertise and experience in overseeing National Lottery-funded projects to tender. The timescales are listed below.
