Our world has changed and we are responding by looking for new ways to engage and excite our audiences through innovative public programming. Now is the time to take a risk and do things differently and we are looking for a Senior Public Programming Manager to lead our recently formed Public Programming Team and spearhead this new approach.

We are looking for a creative individual to create a step change in our public programming offer; someone who can inspire, engage, stimulate, amuse, move and motivate people to learn more about the incredible stories, objects and ships in our care through interpretation and programming. This is an exciting opportunity to shape a team and help NMRN develop its national voice and reach.

Our ideal candidate will have a great understanding of working with museum collections and how to interpret these creatively whilst also being commercially aware. This understanding might have been developed through working on learning programmes, exhibitions, events, live programming or digital programming. We are looking for someone with a broad skillset who is willing to undertake further development to increase their knowledge in all areas of the role.

Key Opportunities

  • Leading our Public Programming Team in expanding our reach and profile. You will be responsible for developing all aspects public programmes including scale and spectacle events and schools programming. The programmes you develop will meet the needs of a diverse audience and generate income and as such you will work closely with our Head of Commercial Services.
  • Managing our Public Programming Managers, Public Events Manager, Access and Inclusion Coordinator, with an overall team of 18 people. You will lead cross-organisational project teams to deliver innovative interpretation bringing our stories and collections alive. You will be comfortable in working collaboratively: you work will work closely with our General Managers to shape our public programmes across all of our sites in Portsmouth, Gosport, Yeovilton and Hartlepool and in the digital realm. The role will require some presence on sites and travel between them.
  • Lead the sector in new ways of working through integrated public programmes. You will develop skills and knowledge across the various programming disciplines and be challenged to innovate and experiment.


You will be up to date in your thinking in public programming in museums, with a sound understanding of financial planning and commercial awareness.

  • You understand the diverse needs of audiences, the barriers to engagement and how access principles can be embedded to deliver a holistic audience experience in both the digital and physical realms.
  • You will have experience of implementing creative object led interpretation methods, be conversant in exhibition development and museum engagement, including in the digital realm.
  • You know how to motivate and inspire teams and bring experience of effectively managing performance.
  • You have significant experience of working within museums, preferably with experience of exhibition / interpretation development, and working with museum collections.
