More Details

I am a freelance Cultural Heritage Learning Consultant, based in York, UK. I have twenty five years’ experience immersed in the arts, heritage and cultural sectors, specializing in learning and participation, creativity and play. Venues include ArtScience Museum (Singapore), Discover – Children’s Story Centre, the Science Museum, Natural History Museum, and Victoria & Albert Museum (UK). Please visit my website for more details.

Prior to living and working in Singapore (2012 – 2017), I led my own Heritage Learning consultancy company, providing advice and Activity Planning services for the Natural History Museum, Historic Royal Palaces, the Huguenot Museum and Bentley Priory Museum, amongst others. From 2015 – 2012, I worked for the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) as an Expert Advisor, Grants Assessor, Mentor and Associate Monitor. The venues I assisted in these capacities included the Ashmolean Museum, National Museums Liverpool and London Transport Museum. I resumed the role of HLF Expert Advisor for Public Engagement in April 2018.

I am a passionate advocate for all audiences being able to readily engage with culture and heritage in ways that resonate with their own interests and life experiences. I also have in-depth experience in developing and promoting play-based and creative opportunities, and have advocated these approaches through training, articles and conference presentations.

Current and recent UK-based projects include the following:
Learning and Interpretation consultant (current): I am assisting the research-led Design Studio HKD in the content development and fabrication of a new Under 5’s gallery at The Wilson in Cheltenham. My role is to help shape the content so that it is compelling and appropriate for the under 5’s and their parents and carers.

Activity Plan consultant (October 2017 – January 2018): With a fellow consultant, I developed and wrote an Activity Plan for Norfolk Museums Service for a Round 2 Heritage Lottery Fund application. This fascinating and valid work explored the most effective ways of engaging young people (aged 12 – 25) with heritage, including those who face significant and multiple barriers.

Learning and Interpretation Consultant (November 2017 – January 2018): I worked with creative design company PLB to provide a high-quality visitor experience at the property ‘Moat Brae – The Birthplace of Peter Pan’. This wonderful, Georgian house in Dumfries was the inspiration for J M Barrie’s seminal work, the children’s book, ‘Peter Pan’. My role was to ensure that the children’s experience throughout their journey through the house and gardens is pedagogically informed, relevant and inspirational. Together with PLB, I also developed content for an exhibition space designed for visitors to engage with existing stories and to create their own.

IVE Trainer (ongoing): Employed by IVE (formally CAPE UK), I am part of a team of freelancers who train teachers in creative teaching techniques to aid creative learning in the classroom, at both Primary and Secondary levels.

I am the lead author for Planning Educational Visits for the Early Years (Sage Publications), and a regular speaker at conferences. I have also written and spoken on the subject of play and creativity.
