About
I’m a professional photographer of almost 40 years experience, and the author of 2 books – Creative Vision, and Design Principles. More than anything else (yes, even more than making my own work) I love putting my photography skills and experience in the hands of others – to pass on what I’ve learnt about a wide range of techniques and materials linked to the medium of Light.
I create exciting and inspirational workshops in practical photography and enjoy outreach education that link the art curriculum with history/heritage and the museums sector; having previously enjoyed commissions with Norfolk Museums Service, Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, and enjoy current employments with Norwich University of the Arts and many schools and 6th forms in Norfolk and Suffolk. I shoot footage and stills for the social media requirements of many businesses and organisations and also photograph artists work and live theatre/performance.
Most recently, I’ve been supplying outreach workshops to schools for both students and their teachers (as organic classroom CPD). I take any opportunity I can to include the history of art and photography within the learning environment and view my educational activities as having very much a grass roots approach, to make history come alive, to shine a light on aspects of our past, and to place the power & potential of the medium of photography into the hands of the next generation. I’ve found art and photography to be a powerful entry point into our historical past and recent history by enabling others to show how dramatic and unique imagery can be created for promotion and marketing purposes, or by bringing past narratives to life using portraiture, costume & styling for museum education activities with young people.
My current areas of professional development include pioneering a completely new approach to portrait & subject Light-painting (employing slow exposure, fibre optic and the “dark aesthetic”), creating accessible 3D LIDAR scans in the field/on location and in museums, and mentoring artists and artist-educators interested in integrating photographic practice into their own work. I still work with b&w darkroom materials, pinhole, old bromide papers and alternative film-based processes and sell my work to a handful of private clients in North America, via exhibitions, and sell reproduction rights to my personal archive of Norfolk coastal landscape photography with the Millennium agency.
I’m also researching and gathering content for my next book, which explores the overlap between photography and life modelling/life drawing and highlights other artists using carbon in their work, charcoal, carbon capture, diamond light, blacksmiths soot, carbon dating, carbon connectivity and the atomic building blocks of human life. @CarbonC6 #carbonC6. Something to keep me going on with, in my 60th year with batteries fully charged.
