Creating Sustainable Community Partnerships

From initial idea to creation and delivery, learning within museums, heritage and cultural settings has gone beyond programming for communities to programming with communities. Highlighting examples of best practice within the sector, Creating Sustainable Community Partnerships is a 4-week training course which will explore how museum learning can work towards embedded long-term and meaningful community participation.

Each week will feature guest speakers who will share their thoughts and experiences of developing lasting, meaningful and equitable relationships; creating a focus for the community as re-opening takes place. Participants will also have the opportunity to share experiences from their own working practice.

Course speakers will include; David Anderson, Esme Ward, Piotr Bienkowski, John McMahon, Nusrat Ahmed, Claire Adler and more, with Case Studies from The Irish Linen Centre, Hackney Museum, Kuumba Nia Arts and Sarah Bayliss and Richard O’Neil discussing engagement with Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Communities (GRT).

By the end of this four-week course we will have:

• Begun to explore how museums, heritage and cultural settings can develop lasting, meaningful and equitable relationships creating a focus for the community as re-opening takes place
• Been introduced to a broad range of community partnerships and models of practice across the UK
• Considered how museums, heritage and cultural settings can create different, inclusive relationships on the context of Covid-19 and recovery
• Created a practical toolkit and developed action planning for the future
• Introduced and, as an action-learning platform, crowd sourced and shared practical case study examples, relevant texts and models of engagement
