Interpretive Writing

1 April 2019 @ 10:00 - 16:00

£90 – £110

The aim of this workshop is to develop your interpretive writing skills to help engage and connect with your audiences through exhibitions, panels, leaflets and other written media.

Who is it for?

The workshop is for you if your role involves writing to engage audiences with your property, collection or subject – whether in heritage, wildlife or science. You may be a curator, project officer, property manager, countryside ranger or visitor experience, learning or education officer. But you don’t have to be! Whether you are working, volunteering or have trustee responsibility this workshop will help you master the art of effective written interpretation.

You will learn how to plan, write and evaluate text. The day will provide you with the principles of interpretive planning and writing, along with essential writing tips and techniques. We will review a sample exhibition to help you evaluate written interpretation. You will also meet with others who undertake similar work to share ideas and experiences.

Who runs the workshop?

The workshop is run by Bill Bevan. Bill is an interpretive writer and planner, published author, and a qualified vocational trainer. He first worked as an interpreter in 1986 when he became a tour guide at Dove Cottage, Grasmere. Since then he has written thousands of words for audiences on behalf of National Parks, the National Trust, English Heritage, national and local museums, visitor attractions and community groups.

The workshop will include presentations, exhibition review, group discussion and practical exercises.
