GEM Cymru teams up with museum learning consultants across the UK to help Welsh museums deliver the new curriculum for Wales

GEM has launched a series of free workshops, training sessions, learning resources and other opportunities to support the museum learning sector in Wales. The programme which launched in 2022 will continue until March 2023. The project aims to stimulate innovative thinking and practice of new resources and Curriculum for Wales specific activities in the museums and cross sector organisations throughout Wales.

  • Sarah Shaw of ‘Museum Tales’ will run free virtual training on adapting the existing curriculum resources for family audiences. These interactive sessions will look at the practicalities of working with families, ideas for self-led activities and facilitated sessions. Dates of the training: 21st November or 2nd December 2022.
  • Dr Huw Griffiths, contributor to the new curriculum for Wales, will be creating two videos as part of a toolkit to help museums and schools embed the elements of Cynefin in their work.
  • North Wales based heritage learning consultancy Keystone Heritage will deliver the Curriculum for Wales awareness training to upskill the staff of museums, archives and local studies libraries in Wales who work outside of learning teams or are not education specialists. This training will provide a practical application of the new curriculum.
  • Heritage consultant Marian Gwyn will lead on developing an INSET session for schools. It would be delivered by museum, archive and local study library staff to their local schools with an emphasis on Cynefin and Black, Asian and minority ethnic histories so that teachers can more confidently work with their students to instil a sense of local history, pride and awareness.
  • The project has enabled to give out ten micro grants for museums across Wales to help them develop and deliver the new curriculum for Wales learning programmes.

GEM’s support programme to the museums of Wales has been made possible thanks to generous support from the Welsh Government, Culture Division. GEM strives to empower the museum learning community in Wales and encourage Welsh museums to proactively engage with the new curriculum for Wales.

Rachel Tranter, GEM director, said, We are delighted to be working with museum learning experts on our programme for Welsh Museums. The new curriculum for Wales is a brilliant opportunity for museums, libraries and archives to reimagine their learning offer for schools, families and communities and we are happy to support the museum & cross sector learning community in Wales to make the most of the new curriculum”.
