Decolonising Portrait Collections and Interpretation: Failure as Social Justice Praxis

27 April 2023 @ 11:00 - 12:30

Free

A webinar for museum, gallery and heritage professionals and academics engaged with portrait research, interpretation and display.

This event will explore practical examples of ‘failed’ anti-racist work. Our speakers will share how they navigated through them and equip participants with tools to deal with ‘failure’. Working in an anti-racist way is ‘messy’, non-linear, highly emotive and requires time and pacing, all of which are antithetical to institutional cultures and can result in ‘failure’. This event will enable reflective space for participants to share their own experiences and best practices for ongoing anti-racist work.

The Understanding British Portraits professional network is committed to supporting decolonising and anti-racist activity in the sector, through its programme of events, Fellowships and practice-sharing initiatives. We are delighted to present new free online events which will continue to highlight the challenges and possibilities of institutional change, examples of positive, tangible progress and the professional needs of those undertaking this important work.
