Introduction to Garden History in 6 weeks
2 November 2019 @ 10:00 - 13:00
£120A six-week course introducing the history of gardens, held every Saturday morning from 2nd November 2019 to 7th December 2019.
Presented by Dr Audrey Gerber. Audrey has expertise in heritage conservation, understanding the features that make historic gardens significant, and how this resonates with us today. Audrey’s approach to teaching garden history is to generate an appreciation of the beauty of historic gardens from the visual and the intellectual perspective. She will awaken your curiosity about what you see, and what it tells us about the past and the future of gardens.
The history of cultivating plants goes back to our first settlements. Gardens, as we know them now, are a celebration of the beauty of plants, and respond to our emotional and physical reactions to design. Changes in size and style of gardens through the ages reflect the influences of politics, art, social agendas, and even fashion. This Introduction to Garden History course, uses case studies of historic gardens to illustrate particular trends in style, and explains what defined each change in style and design philosophy.
