We are excited to feature Dhikshana Turakhia Pering as a keynote speaker at next month’s GEM Conference 2019. She is the Young People’s Producer for Brent 2020 – London Borough of Culture and will be presenting three clear ways to work with today’s audiences using the journey of Brent Blueprint Collection, a part-leadership programme, part think-tank.

Dhikshana shares a few of her thoughts with us as our first Weekly Spotlight feature. Learn more about her now – and come hear her on Thursday morning (10:00) at GEM Conference 2019!

What are you most looking forward to at GEM Conference 2019?
“Connecting with people and sharing real life, practical ideas and inspiration on how to use our heritage and stories to inspire. Oh, and the Red House Mysteries Escape Room- for three reasons: I love immersive shizzle like this, I think we should do more of this in our sector and my Brother-in-law is the genius behind it – It’s a Pering family affair at this year’s GEM Conference!”

What is your favourite museum, gallery, or heritage site and why?
“The Tenement Museum in Brooklyn, New York. They tell their story well; they have strong leadership that stands up for the values of the diverse communities it represents especially in the turbulent political climate America is in. It also has a great gift shop and book shop.”

What is your best heritage education top tip?
“As a visitor and mama to a toddler, heritage sites make a great place to stop on long car journeys instead of service stations. Good changing facilities, nice cafes, something to look at and usually space to run around. I connect as a worker to the work we do, the stories we tell on a daily basis bring in a variety of audiences and the mission of the museum can be absorbed.”

Where can people find you at GEM Conference 2019?
“Giving my first keynote of my career. Through the conference, I’ll be wearing white fresh Nike Air Forces and pottering round chatting. Also, trying to absorb as much as I can…”
