Developing inclusive activities for families with Additional Learning Needs (ALN)

20 November 2023 @ 10:00 - 12:30

Free

Approximately one in five learners in Wales have Additional Learning Needs (ALN). Adding non-disabled siblings to that number will increase this potential audience significantly and just knowing this is a powerful advocacy tool to make a business case for ALN inclusion in your museum.

Inclusive and accessible activities, resources and programming, as well as confident staff who value the needs of all visitors, are the cornerstones to creating an ALN inclusive museum.

In this session, SEND in Museums Consultant Sam Bowen will guide you through what inclusive activities look like, the positive impact they have on ALN families and how to develop them at your site. Drawing on her own professional museum learning knowledge and lived as a parent to a disabled child, Sam will inspire you to think practically about how you can embed this accessible practice in your own organisation, show examples of best practice and then lead you through a planning exercise.

You will also hear from the Dylan Thomas Centre in Swansea and learn how they developed activities both in their programming and self-led offer to support ALN family visits.

During this virtual training event, we will:
– find out what ALN is and how to support this audience and their families
– explore what good and bad experiences in museums feel like and why this work matters
– share how to make quick business case points for advocating for ALN activities in your museum
– think about how to develop a range of activities both within your programming and as self-led options for ALN families
– plan in the short and medium term how you can put this work into practice.

This virtual training event will be delivered over a half-day session (two hours and 30 minutes with a short break) by Sam Bowen, SEND in Museums Consultant. This session will be delivered in English with bilingual slides, with an option to provide a Welsh language interpreter.

You attend the live webinar or buy a recording to watch whenever suits you.

Run in partnership with the Federation of Museums and Art Galleries of Wales and generously supported by the Welsh Government.
