About

I’m an experienced heritage consultant working collaboratively with a variety of organisations to create great, memorable visitor experiences.

More Details

I have contributed to many successful National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) applications, drawing together strategic thinking with an achievable approach to cost planning and delivery, bringing a clear understanding of benefits accruing from investment in interpretation within the wider tourism, enterprise and community context. My expertise helps support client capacity and my skills encompass project visioning and visitor experience strategies, audience development and activity planning, stakeholder and community consultation. I also help with researching and delivering appealing content, story-mapping and collaborative development (co-creation) for cultural heritage sites.

I’m a Fellow and previous Chairperson of the Association for Heritage Interpretation (AHI) and a Fellow of the Tourism Society. I’ve spent the last 3 years as a Director of a Community Interest Company (CIC) for The Red Tower, a regeneration project on York’s medieval city walls, creating a sustainable community space and garden, all managed by volunteers.

A sample of current and recent projects:

Following delivery of a successful Round 1 award, leading the Heritage Fund Round 2 Activity Plan, stakeholder and community consultation programme for Rochdale Town Hall to conserve and revitalise one of the finest Grade 1 listed civic buildings in the UK planning an exciting 4 year Action Plan for engagement, volunteering and skills development

Audience development and interpretation for Manx National Heritage and their portfolio of ancient monuments across the Isle of Man, exploring new opportunities for greater local engagement and volunteering, family friendly activity and stories

Trustee team guidance and capacity support for Whitby Museum, producing a gallery development plan for their bicentenary, defining the trustee and volunteers’ vision for enhancing visitor access, engagement activity and collection care while retaining their much-loved ‘cabinet of curiosities’ atmosphere.

An interpretation strategy and audience research for Moray’s Great Places project, to explore ways of engaging new and younger audiences with Moray and Speyside’s distinctive natural and cultural heritage stories using community co-production and character based storytelling

North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers interpretation strategy and audience development support for their successful £4.7 million award Heritage Fund Round 1 submission to interpret the restored Grade 2* listed building and interiors, notably the outstanding library and archive.

Award highlights – as an associate interpretive planner for Bright White we were finalists for a Discover Heritage Award for Excellence 2019. I prepared an interpretation strategy for the Engine Shed, Scotland’s Building Conservation Centre, for the Heritage Fund on behalf of Historic Scotland. This project creates a training centre and national hub that showcases Scotland’s rich variety of built heritage, skills and innovative technologies.

Also as part of the Bright White design team I received a Discover Heritage Award for Excellence for producing an interpretation strategy and content development for the multi award-winning Battle of Bannockburn Centre on behalf of National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland. Work included social history research and storyline development to inform the design process and create a ‘must visit’ destination.
