More Details

Robin is an experienced museum and heritage consultant specialising in audience development and learning.  A Cambridge History of Art graduate, he has worked since 1985 in the heritage sector, setting up White Rook Projects in 1997.  Guided by the knowledge that we all create our own personal meanings when visiting a museum or heritage site, his approach is to encourage visitors to engage with what they see, making sense of it through their own experience.  In particular, Robin encourages the use of the arts in museums, developing opportunities for inspiration and creativity.  What makes museums unique is their ability to make people connect with the past through real objects – the ‘historic reality’ –and Robin’s vision is to break down barriers between the visitor and this reality. Here’s how he can make this happen:

  • Working with cultural organisations to change hidebound patterns so that audience needs are put first;
  • Working with designers and curators to ensure that learning is the whole point of any exhibition;
  • Convening teams of specialists tailor made for a client’s project;
  • Advising on – or designing and making – interactives which allow visitors to engage creatively with collections;
  • Training staff, volunteers and stakeholders to experiment with heritage learning approaches;
  • Evaluating projects (particular experience with NLHF) so that learning outcomes are identified and recorded, to the benefit of the participants, the funding body and the commissioning organisation.
